Reading in Grade 1M

The Grade 1 students have begun to actively use positive reading and writing strategies as part of our Readers and Writers Workshop process. They helped to inspire a new name for our Word Study sessions and so we now call this Rainbow Rocket Reading as the colours of the rainbow signify all the different parts to each word and the patterns that are created. We work on different patterns within words each week, selected for different levels within the class. For example, the ‘ee’ pattern to make the long vowel sound was worked on recently as well as the digraphs ‘th’, ‘sh’ and ‘ch’.

Reading Strategies

During Guided Reading we have been focusing on our independent strategies and how to solve problems using one, two or even three different methods BEFORE asking for help. Ask your child to explain a few of our strategies and start using them at home. Taking a ‘running start’ is a favourite of mine to enhance student fluency after they have tried to decode… happy reading!

Mindfulness continues…

The students have been amazingly receptive to mindfulness strategies. Once a week we use Cosmic Kids as our re-grouping and re-focusing technique but for the rest of the week the students are independently mindful using breathing techniques, closed eyes and only a small trigger thought led by me. These triggers might involve thinking of a colour, a smell, a feeling or an event that has made them happy or have a positive feeling. They might also be encouraged to think of negative thoughts but then guided through how to let go of these feelings. I have been so proud of the students for their efforts to be Zen Den Masters! Have a look at Cosmic Kids yourself to get an idea…
